Southwestern

Please call for prices.

Wood Works’ Southwestern section displays our custom designed furniture reflecting Mexican, Spanish, Anglo and Native American traditions.

We can make one of these pieces for you in pine, cherry or mesquite – or custom design and build a derivation to suit your unique specifications.

Cabinet Table:

This one of a kind piece is made from planks of Pennsylvania cherry. The design objective is a balance between strength and delicacy, the heft of the whole offset by the lightness with which the rosewood struts hold the cabinet within the table legs.

The cabinet interior features a small drawer with hand cut half blind dovetails. The cabinet itself is joined with dovetails.

The table top and cabinet door include a solid inlay band of ironwood, a Southwestern species with intricate, dense grain that ranges from black to almost gold.

Dimensions: 33-inches wide, 29-inches high, 15 inches deep. Finish: tung oil.

Mesquite and Cherry Bench

The mesquite legs of this bench that envelop the cherry bench top were carved with a mind to the wind and rain swept natural sandstone sculptures found in places like Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelly.

Dimensions: 48-inches wide, 15-inches high, bench top 15-inches deep, posts 20-inches deep. Finish: Linseed oil and Epifines varnish on posts; linseed oil and tung oil on bench top.

Shaker Benches with Turquoise Inlay

I made several of these standard Shaker benches in pine to develop the technique for the turquoise colored inlay.

One inlay is of a Cocapelli, a flute playing spirit found in several South American and Southwestern Indian cultures. The other is the image of a bird adapted from a pottery bowel found at Mesa Verde.

Dimensions: 26-inches wide, 16-inches high, 14-inches deep. Finish: Epifines varnish.

Mesquite Chippendale Chairs

Chairs made of mesquite, the Southwest’s signature wood, are most frequently executed in a Spanish colonial or Mexican rustic style. For this set, however, we’ve used a classical Chippendale design – flared rear legs and a seat that is wider in front than at the back.

Each of the six chairs in this set is unique, distinguished by its own pattern of resin-filled gaps, a hallmark of mesquite. Each chair back has a similar but unique black slash that helps unify the set.

Mortise and tenon joinery is used throughout and the seat rails are strengthened with corner braces. The seat and back rest are removable. To maximize comfort, the seat is of frame and webbing construction.

Dimensions: Rear legs 40-inches high; seat 19-one-quarter-inches high; seat 21-inches wide in front, 17-inches wide at read. Finish: six coats of tung oil.

Mesquite Table with Wenge Border

Two-and-a-half inch wide black wenge creates a dramatic border on this book-matched mesquite board table with Hepplewhite tapered legs – tapered on inside facing edges, straight on outside edges.

For added strength, 1-inch by ¼ inch spines run the length of the wenge/mesquite connection while the sides have a mesquite tenon fitting into a wenge mortise.

The character of the table top needs to be seen to be appreciated – natural knots and cracks typical of mesquite and an intricate and changing grain pattern.

Finished with three coats of water-based satin lacquer over shellac.

Dimensions: 46 ½ inches long, 22 inches wide and 28 inches high.

Mesquite Table with Rosewood Border

Two-inch square Laotian rosewood frames the book-matched mesquite boards in this solidly built trestle table.

The crossbeam between the posts has a striking lengthwise natural fissure.

Mortise and tenon joints attach the crossbeam to the posts and the posts to the feet.

This table top is highly figured with knots, cracks and intricate grain patterns that lend mesquite its unique character.

A cherry spine strengthens the mesquite/rosewood connection along the length and a mesquite tenon fits into a rosewood mortise along the sides.

Dimensions: 38 inches long by 20 ½ inches wide and 22 ½ inches high. Finished with seven coats of low gloss tung oil.
